Curriculum Years 0-10

Introduction

Hillview Christian school provides a secure and stable space where a culture of God’s transformational grace shapes every interaction ensuring that students feel a sense of value, belonging, and purpose. They can be confident of knowing they are part of our te whānau o te kura (wider school family) where they can confidently grow and develop.

Anchored and guided by our special Christ-centred character, our passionate, professional, and pastoral teaching team is committed to each child’s holistic development—nurturing them physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and most importantly, spiritually.

The staff are encouraged to live out an authentic faith which is real, relevant, and relational. Our Christian Living programme is not just restricted to a curriculum area but is woven throughout all aspects of school life and learning. This is outworked through pupils engaging in service projects not just within the school community but beyond.

We believe that every child is made in God’s image.  They have all been purposefully designed with unique abilities. Our team caters for tailored extension and learning support. We honour the distinct path God has set for each pupil.

It is extremely important for our Home and School partnership to remain vibrant and healthy. Key ingredients to this are regular communication, establishment of strong relationships, and a high trust model that we are working together for the benefit of the child. This provides an excellent foundation for the pupil(s) to thrive.
We enthusiastically welcome and celebrate different cultures, recognising that our differences display the breadth of God’s creativity.

Year 0-2: Junior School

It is well known that the first three years of school are crucial for a child to develop a firm learning foundation. This includes providing a learning environment that develops a sense of belonging and stability. Rather than simply learning facts, they are learning how to learn, how to relate to others, and how to become confident, capable pupils. There is a significant amount of resourcing that is used to provide learning support while extending those pupils with areas of strengths. We provide a stimulating educational environment that inspires an early enthusiasm to learn and celebrate natural curiosity.
Year 0-2 pupils will experience daily devotions and prayer, be encouraged to ask curious questions about the world in which they live and develop an attitude to put other’s first. Children are exposed to Biblical stories, introduced to apologetical material, while creating an environment where the children will want to know and love Jesus.

Year 3-6: Primary School

In Year 3-6 the pupils are becoming more independent building on what already has been learned in the Junior School. Pupils are introduced to a managed use of technology, and this only occurs in instances where the learning for pupils is enhanced. We maintain a strong focus on Reading, Writing, and Mathematics while continuing to provide a balanced range of academic, sporting, social, and cultural opportunities.
We encourage pupils to deepen their understanding of God through further exposure to Biblical stories and apologetical material. Pupils will be inspired to live out their faith in practical ways, while demonstrating our school values. This is affirmed through our motto of being, OTHERS FIRST focused – serving others as we are blessed to be a blessing.
Together, we build a strong sense of Whanaungatanga - creating a community where every student feels known, valued, and can flourish. Participating in the EOTC programme (Education Outside the Classroom) assists in establishing this.

Year 7-10: Middle School

The Year 7-10 Middle School represents a distinctive period of life for our young people. We recognise that pupils are at a unique stage of development with changing physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual needs. During these years, identity, friendships, purpose, and a sense of belonging become increasingly important. Staff are encouraged to ensure the way they interact with pupils within this age group is real, relevant, and relational.

Our Middle School programme is designed to provide strong relationships, while fostering learning, personal growth, and self-management. We seek to support pupils as they grow in confidence, independence, and responsibility.

While maintaining a strong focus on Reading, Writing, Science, and Mathematics, we also offer a range of specialist subjects providing valuable opportunities to develop practical skills and explore new interests. In addition to this, there is a strong EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) programme involving day and overnight activities.

We provide a meaningful and intentional leadership programme for our Year 10 pupils which involves the provision of many opportunities for pupils to engage their leadership skills. Possible future careers are intentionally explored during these years culminating in individual interviews at Year 8 and Year 10.

Our Christian Living programme transitions from Biblical stories to exploring Biblical principles, precepts, and promises. There is a continuation of apologetical lessons while still allowing teaching staff to respond to various themes as they may arise.

Pupils are also given opportunity to serve, lead, and make meaningful contributions within the school and wider community. Through these experiences, we aim to grow young people who love God, are confident in who they are, and are equipped to positively impact the world through service, and leadership.
