Learning Support

The Learning Centre

At Hillview we believe that “every learner has the potential to make a valuable contribution to their family, whanau, community and to Aotearoa New Zealand as a whole” (MOE 2021)  Diversity is a strength and we design our learning activities, so that learners can learn at an appropriate pace and be affirmed in their identity.

(HCS Learning Centre Beliefs and Rationale)

A Learning Centre operates on both the junior and senior side of Hillview Christian School.  In these one on one or small group environments, students receive assistance in the area(s) that are challenging for them or their results indicate that support is required. The environment allows greater teacher attention and a quieter space for students to work. We are also privileged to grow students who have ability in a particular area, drawing together talent to work together to achieve specific goals. All groups typically have between 6-8 students.

We are very blessed to have the support of many experienced Teacher Aides that work alongside groups or individuals, both inside and outside the classroom. We also have a superb team of Specialist Teachers who work in the areas of Maths and English.

The teachers in the Learning Centre work with classroom teachers to support learning, but also to provide additional activities that enable all students to achieve. We like to say in the Learning Centre “No child shall be left behind.”

The Learning Centre also coordinates Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for some children.  We also work alongside a range of outside service providers such as Resource Teaching of Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) Speech Language Therapy and Assistive Technology.

At any one time, the following groups can be running in or through the Learning Centre -

  • English Plus - Writing, Reading & Spelling support
  • Maths Plus - support in the broad maths curriculum
  • Te Puna - lifeskills based for practical learning
  • Boys Writing
  • Extension Inquiry
  • Extension Writing
  • Extension Maths

English Language Learners

Ko te reo te tuakiri, ko te reo tōku ahurei, ko te reo te ora.
Language is my identity; language is my uniqueness; language is life.

At Hillview Christian School, we value our diverse cultural community and want to give all students the opportunity to succeed at school. We have experienced teachers and teacher assistants who support our students who have
English as a second language. We provide in-class support as well as small group learning opportunities to help students learn effectively. All students who have a second language at home will be assessed by our English Language
teacher to determine how best to support their learning. We value our partnership with families and provide opportunities during the year to be involved in cultural days that help us learn more about our community and where our students come from.
